If you have never tried Reflexology before then you probably wonder what it is all about.
Well let me explain what Reflexology means to me and what you can expect from one of my treatments.
I found Reflexology as a natural therapy to complement my massage and yet it has developed into my passion. Practicing this therapy, and seeing its powerful effect on each person I treat, gives me a constant thirst for knowledge and drive to share this with others.
Reflexology is a gentle form of natural healing that involves treatment by massage and pressure to the reflex areas of the feet and/or hands. The reflexes correspond to all the various parts and organs of the body and, therefore, reflexology offers a means to treat the whole body. For example your toes are representative of your head. By releasing energy and by stimulating the body’s nervous system it promotes healing of both body and mind.
Throughout history feet have been representative of mobility, security and grounding. Reflexology started thousands of years ago and the first recorded reference to this is over 4000 yrs. ago in Egypt. These are images painted on a wall of a tomb with the writing reading “Do not let it be painful” and the reply was “I do as you please”. The Reflexology we know today has been credited with Dr. William Fitzgerald in the US. It wasn’t until the 1960’s that modern Reflexology arrived in the UK.
What can it help with?
The reasons people may seek Reflexology are many and varied.
These are a few, yet this list is endless:
- Self esteem
- Sore neck and shoulder
- Life changes
- Digestive issues
- Back problems
- Sleep issues
Consultation After an initial consultation to establish whether Reflexology is safe and suitable for you and why you want to try Reflexology, you will be asked to remove your shoes and socks and if possible roll up your trousers to your knee.
Massage Once you are comfortable on the couch, making sure your back and head is supported, the treatment begins with a gentle massage and manipulation of your feet to introduce my touch.
Reflexes I will then begin to work with the reflexes on your feet. I usually work from your toes to your heels and usually work from right to left but this is not set in stone and your feet will often guide me.
You may feel different sensations when I work on the reflexes. These can include soreness, dullness, popping etc. These sensations may be localised on the foot reflex although you may feel reactions in other areas of your body. This is not unusual so do not worry.
Communication You may feel me stop and hold a certain area, this is to either increase, decrease or release energy. If any areas are too uncomfortable then it is important to communicate this to me. I can leave the reflex and go back to it later on in the treatment.
It is vital I record any findings and you may notice me making notes throughout the treatment. This is to allow me to discuss findings with you and so I can adapt any subsequent treatments effectively.
Linking To close the treatment, any areas that are ‘troubled’ will be connected and balanced, finishing with general balancing. During this you will be asked to close your eyes, breathe deeply and to focus.
Findings You will be given time to recover and then we will discuss my findings. Having an unhappy reflex show up during the treatment often makes sense during the feedback. For example the shoulder reflex may show up during the treatment and at the feedback the client may disclose the injury they have been suffering from for years!
Aftercare We can then discuss a potential treatment plan that is workable for you. Before you go I will always try to give you a practical way you can prolong the treatment. This could be a first aid reflex on your hands for example the solar plexus hold to help with anxiety or showing you specific areas to work with such as showing the client with the shoulder injury the shoulder reflex on their hands to enable them to self treat.
